OPSRRA Director’s Report – August 2026
So far we have had a wonderful summer here. Cooler temperatures than previous years (more like “normal” summers when I was a kid) and some rain in July to keep the fire hazard in check a little. What we had in July was “weather”, what we still have is ongoing climate change. The land is continuing to dry out and streams are continuing to dry up. Despite the rain, most creeks along Highway 14 are trickles, or standing pools of water. OPSRRA is very aware of the change that “climate change “ is bringing to our area. As tourists continue to flock to the west coast to avoid overheated urban areas we must be vigilant about campfire bans and in making sure that everyone is well aware of fire prevention activities. The new OPSRRA boxes attached to some of our bulletin boards (Jordan River, Shirley, Kemp Lake Road, Otter Point Place, Robinson) contain free information on Fire Preparedness, Fire Smart, and Emergency Information. Help yourself and share the information with your neighbours. If this pilot project is successful we will add more boxes to our boards.
Summer is also the time for maintenance on the bulletin boards. We have cleaned off old ads and weathered papers and clipped low hanging branches from around the boards. The next step will be to wire brush the boards, paint if needed, and replace one or two that are nearing the end of use. If I remember to take the camera, I’ll put an update on our Facebook. What we noticed from cleaning off the boards is that many businesses who are not business members of OPSRRA are posting their ads. We usually look the other way as long as the ads are not causing damage, but once a year we contact those businesses and ask them to sign up for a business membership ($10 per year, unlimited use of the boards, listing the business online with a link to their webpage). The cost is small for each business and it helps OPSRRA to keep all membership fees as low as possible.
We sadly note that some people are not as respectful to the OPSRRA notice boards as they might be. Please do not put nail or tacks into the wood frames or post. An unknown person decided to use nails into the frame of a notice board on Otter Point Road to hang up a torn off piece of cardboard advertising a garage sale up one of the side roads. Simply not acceptable. The notice boards do cost to make and keep in good repair and we only ask people to treat them well for their meeting and lost pet/ found keys, and garage sales type notices and to share the cost in a very small way if it is a business ad. Not much to ask, is it?
