OPSRRA held its Semi-Annual Meeting November 30th at the Shirley Community Hall. We reviewed some of the major actions we have taken since the April AGM. The most applause was for the painting of the centre line down Otter Point Road…finally …and for our pledge to begin pushing for a centre line down Kemp Lake Road next year. We only have two roads (other than Highway 14) in the whole area which have painted lines so not much to ask for from MOTT we think.
Director Al Wickheim brought us up to date with his actions in the JdF EA and specifically mentioned the occurrence of drug labs in Otter Point and Jordan River. Use caution and contact the RCMP for advice if you have suspicions about such activities in your area.
Our speakers were Jeri Grant (JdF lead for ESS) and Corey Anderson (CRD manager ESS and Preparedness). They gave us a spirited and informative talk on the process of what to expect in the event of a forest fire and evacuation. This was followed by many questions. Then a special talk from Shirley Fire Chief Leah Hill on the part that her responders play in such a scenario. The presentations were very well received.
As of the end of November, it should be noted that only 63% of our normal rainfall has fallen this year. So we are hoping that this dryness will be filled by December rains. Our streams and aquifers need to be replenished. If you are harvesting rainwater you might want to know that the 606 Water Group has completed the rainwater tank rebate program for 2025. Five $1,000 rebates were awarded and they hope to find similar funding from the CRD in 2026 to run the program again.
OPSRRA wishes all residents a happy and safe holiday season and happy New Year.
