By the time this post gets onto the OPSRRA website we will be well underway with the Federal Election. All of us will be asked to vote for the candidate who will best represent the interests of our community and our country in Ottawa.  This may not be an easy task for many of us.

There is only time for one Candidates Meeting in our area so OPSRRA is teaming up with the Sooke Chamber of Commerce. OPSRRA and the Sooke Chamber will be holding our local Candidates Meeting on April 13th at 1:00pm at the Sooke Community Hall on Shields Road in Sooke.

Given the current challenges facing Canada, an informed voter is the first line of defence and we wanted to make sure that we could maximize attendees. The Sooke Community Hall is close by and provides one of the biggest venues.  This will give us an opportunity to meet the Candidates and to hear their policies and their answers to questions in a moderated format.

Candidates for Esquimalt-Sooke-Saanich – our riding – will be finalized by Wednesday April 9 and can be found here. The time is short to prepare for this meeting; however, OPSRRA has reached out to the confirmed candidates and trusts that the Federal Parties will do their very best to have their candidate appear at our meeting.  We will confirm participants as we receive commitments and anticipate that our efforts will be rewarded with a full slate of potential MPs for the meeting on April 13th.

Key dates to remember – you should have your voter information card by April 11th.

Early voting – Canadian Armed Forces – April 14 – 19 on base or with their unit.

Advanced polling – April 18 -21.

Election day – April 28

Remember to vote. It does make a difference. Just months ago in the provincial election our region was was decided by less than 150 votes and or for a time, less than 25 votes. Looking forward to seeing you out there.

OPSRRA Annual General Meeting

The second announcement is for the OPSRRA Annual General Meeting on April 27th at 2 pm in the Shirley Community Hall.  This yearly meeting will feature a summary of the actions that OPSRRA has taken over the past year.

There will also be Board elections for OPSRRA ably handled by Juan de Fuca Director Al Wickheim  and a presentation by Sid Jorna on the Parks and Trails in the Juan de Fuca region.

Do you think you cannot make a difference? Yes you can! – consider volunteering with OPSRRA or standing for election to the OPSRRA Board. It is a small commitment that gives a lot back to our community.
