What a wild BC election time we have had.
Congratulations go out to Dana Lajeunesse as our new MLA for the Juan de Fuca/Malahat Electoral District. We wish him well in Victoria, and hope that he will be able to visit us next year for a Town Hall, or two, in our area once he has settled into his new position.
Closer to home, we are seeing more development in the Shirley and Jordan River area. Several items related to new housing and land development are making their way through the JdF Land Use Committee and the Shirley APC. One item carefully being considered in relation to these developments is the availability of water to support these changes. Understanding the strains on the watersheds and aquifers is essential to the success of any new development.
November 24 at the Shirley Community Hall from 2pm to 4pm OPSRRA will host a mid-term meeting and a guest speaker. Dr. David van Everdingen is the Regional Hydrogeologist at Water Protection, BC Ministry of Forests, and he will be joining us to talk about water.
David’s expertise is in the characterization, monitoring, and assessment of local and regional groundwater flow systems. He has more than 20 years of experience with field program development, supervision, and data analysis as well as monitoring and water-well installation, aquifer testing and water-quality monitoring. In addition, David has extensive experience in the development of software for hydrogeological and geological applications.
David’s interests include statistical analysis of water quality data, surface water-groundwater interaction and effects of climate change on groundwater. Dr Van Everdingen gave an excellent presentation to members of the Metchosin Council and the public at a presentation by the Bilston Habitat Protection Association earlier this year. We are fortunate to have him do likewise for our area. Please plan to join us in Shirley on November 24, 2pm to 4pm for an update from the OPSRRA Board and our guest speaker.
